Review Process

All manuscripts are submitted electronically through our online submission system.

1

Initial screening

The editorial office reviews each submission for scope, completeness, and adherence to our guidelines. Authors are notified within 3 to 5 business days whether the manuscript will proceed to peer review.

2

Peer review

Manuscripts that pass screening undergo single blind review by 2 to 4 independent reviewers. Authors are not told the identities of the handling editors or reviewers.

3

Publication

Accepted manuscripts are typically published online within 30 to 60 days of submission.

Conflicts of interest

The Editor in Chief ensures that everyone involved in evaluating a manuscript is free of conflicts of interest that could bias the review.

Publication Fees

JOID is fully open access. Every article is free for anyone to read, download, and share immediately upon publication. Instead of charging readers or subscribers, we cover the cost of publishing through fees paid by authors, their institutions, or their funders.

Submission fee

A submission fee of US $50 is due at the time of submission. This fee supports initial editorial screening and is not refundable, regardless of the editorial decision.

Article Processing Charge (APC)

The APC is charged only after a manuscript has passed peer review and been accepted for publication. Manuscripts that are rejected or withdrawn before acceptance are never charged an APC.

Tier Who qualifies APC (USD)
Standard Authors from industry, private practice, and other organizations $1,950
Reduced Early-career clinicians, nonprofit authors, and authors in low and middle-income countries $975
Full waiver Eligible students, trainees, academic authors, and authors with demonstrated financial need $0

Fee waivers

Request a reduced APC or full waiver when you submit your manuscript. The editorial office will confirm your tier in writing.

Complete the APC Waiver Request Form →

Editorial independence

Fee tier and ability to pay have no bearing on editorial decisions. Editors and reviewers are not informed of an author's fee status, and waiver requests are handled separately by the editorial office.

What the APC covers

Because JOID does not charge readers, the APC funds the full publishing process: management of peer review, editorial and copyediting support, typesetting and production, DOI assignment, permanent online hosting with free public access, and promotion of published work to the integrative dermatology community.

Payment

An invoice is issued to the corresponding author upon acceptance and may be paid by the author, their institution, or a funder. Authors with an approved waiver request will receive confirmation instead of an invoice. Articles proceed to publication once payment is received or a waiver has been confirmed.
